How Triton Giving Day Opens Doors to Lifelong Learning
UC San Diego’s annual Triton Giving Day brings together the UC San Diego community in support of what matters most. For supporters of the Division of Extended Studies, that means powering lifelong learning.
From sparking curiosity in young students or advancing careers through upskilling and reskilling to enriching the retirement years, three featured Extended Studies funds help expand access and opportunity at every stage of life.
Each year, Triton Giving Day at UC San Diego brings together a community of donors, alumni, students and partners united by the belief that education should be accessible, impactful and lifelong. During Triton Giving Day 2026, taking place all day on Apr. 29, the UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies continues to advance that vision by featuring three opportunities to invest in learners at every stage of life—from curious K–12 students to working professionals and engaged retirees.
At its core, Extended Studies is built on a simple but powerful idea: learning is a living, breathing adventure for each of us. Whether someone is just beginning to explore their interests and skills, seeking to advance or pivot in their career or pursuing intellectual enrichment later in life, access to high-quality education can be transformative.
Through the three dedicated funds highlighted on Triton Giving Day, Extended Studies is expanding that access and strengthening pathways for lifelong learning.
Inspiring the Next Generation: Sally Ride Science
For pre-college learners, Sally Ride Science represents the starting point of that lifelong journey. Founded 25 years ago to inspire curiosity and confidence in science, the program continues to engage K–12 students through hands-on STEAM experiences that connect learning to the real world.
Today, as Sally Ride Science marks more than two decades of impact, it remains focused on opening doors—especially for students who may not otherwise see themselves reflected in science and technology fields. Through workshops, camps and classroom partnerships, students are encouraged to explore, experiment and imagine new possibilities.
Support for Sally Ride Science on Triton Giving Day helps ensure that financial barriers do not prevent participation. Scholarships and program funding allow more students to access these experiences, helping to cultivate the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers and leaders. It is an investment not only in individual learners, but in a more inclusive and scientifically literate future.

Advancing Careers: Continuing Education Scholarships
For adult learners, education often serves as a bridge—connecting where they are to where they want to go next. The Continuing Education Scholarship fund supports individuals seeking to build new skills, earn certificates or transition into new careers.
Each year, thousands of learners turn to Extended Studies to gain practical, career-relevant knowledge across fields such as business, technology, healthcare, sustainability and more. These programs are designed with flexibility in mind, meeting learners where they are and equipping them with tools they can apply immediately in the workforce.
Scholarship support plays a critical role in making these opportunities accessible. By reducing financial barriers, donors help empower individuals to pursue career advancement, adapt to changing industries and contribute meaningfully to their communities. For many, this support can be the difference between postponing a goal and achieving it.

Enriching Lives: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
Learning doesn’t end at retirement—in many ways, it begins again. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UC San Diego offers intellectually engaging courses, lectures and community experiences for adults aged 50 and older.
Through OLLI, members explore topics ranging from history and literature to science, policy and the arts, all while building meaningful connections with peers who share a passion for discovery. The program fosters not only knowledge but also community, curiosity and continued personal growth.
Gifts to the OLLI activities fund help sustain and enhance these offerings, ensuring that members have access to high-quality programming, distinguished speakers and a vibrant learning environment. By supporting OLLI, donors help create opportunities for lifelong learners to stay engaged, informed and connected. Importantly, you can double the impact of your gift thanks to a generous donation from Jeff Sakihara, MD ’91 providing a dollar-for-dollar match up to $2,000!

A Lifelong Learning Ecosystem
Together, these three funds tell a larger story—one of continuity, access and impact across a lifetime. From a young student discovering a passion for science, to a mid-career professional gaining new skills or pursuing a new path to a retiree exploring ways to stay active and of service, Extended Studies creates a continuum of learning that evolves with each individual.
Triton Giving Day is an opportunity to invest in that lifeline. Through the generosity of the Triton community, UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies can continue to expand access, empower learners and shape a future where education is not a single chapter, but a lifelong journey.
