The Barbary Wars 1793–1815
Speaker
Robert Ett
Coordinator
Steve Clarey
From 1793 to 1806, and again in 1815, the infant U.S. fought a series of wars on the north African coast against the Barbary States. The wars partially led to the change from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution governing the new nation and led to the new country being accepted among the community of nations. Americans who were or would later become known played a part. We established a standing navy, and incidentally, the first raising of an American flag overseas. The aftermath for world events was significant.
